Introduction to Metalworking Techniques is an informative, engaging and exploratory course where you will be able to learn the basics of steel fabrication, welding and gain a better understanding of how to bring your ideas to life in metal. 

In the first half of the course you will learn how cut, bend and form cold metal and how to MIG weld using mild steel. Through these processes you will learn the potential of the material and the different processes. 

For the second half of the course, you will be given the opportunity to come in with your own idea and with support and guidance from your tutor you will make a personally directed project in metal.  

After completing this course, you will have completed our metalwork induction and will automatically be able to book our metal workshop. 

About the course 

1. Introduction to Metalwork Area (including Health and Safety Induction) 

Introduction to machines including chop saw, linisher, angle grinders, drills, MIG welder and plasma cutter. 

2. Understanding Metal Workflow 

You will be provided with additional metal working techniques and will apply what you have learnt through cutting the material, linishing it, bending it, and then finally welding pieces together. This will provide a better understanding of a standard metalwork workflow 

3. Metalworking Personal project 

Inspired by the processes you have learnt you now have the chance to make a personal project in metal. It could range from a practical frame or table, to more sculptural and experimental structures. Materials will be provided, and your tutor your tutor will advise you on what is practical and manageable within the workshop and the time available. 

Through this personal project you will: 

• Work collaboratively with your tutor to figure out the best route to achieve an idea 

• Utilise available materials and machinery 

• Explore problem solving in metal 

ACCESSIBILITY 

Please note at this time Studio 2 has no step-free access and has three flights of stairs up to the Workshop Room. 

We have a hearing loop available.

In using the workshop, you understand that the use of all tools and machinery belonging to Blackhorse Workshop is at your own risk. 

In making a course booking, it is your responsibility to read the full course description and abide by the guidelines given. If the course requires a Health and Safety Induction and you have not taken the relevant course, we reserve the right to remove you from the course. 

Appropriate and adequate clothing must be worn in the workshop. Sturdy shoes / boots must be worn, no trainers. No shorts and no synthetic fabrics to be worn in metalwork, cotton, wool and leather only.  

Students must follow Blackhorse Workshop Health and Safety guidance at all times. If you fail to follow these instructions you may be asked to leave the course. 

People with long term respiratory conditions should be aware that the workshop is a dusty environment that may impact their health. 

If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant we recommend consulting a health professional before taking part in welding or blacksmithing. 

Please note that refunds and course transfers are available up to 1 week before start date. We cannot offer refunds or course transfers after this date. 

We cannot offer refunds due to illness. Once a course has started, we cannot offer any transfers or refunds. 

INSURANCE

To make a bench booking at Blackhorse Workshop you need to be covered by Public Liability Insurance. You can take out your own insurance or get cover for a year under the Blackhorse Workshop PLI at a cost of £30 per year. Your tutor will explain this to you when completing your induction.
