Young People
In a world of rapidly advancing digital technologies and increasing barriers into creative industries, hands on practical skills are in danger of becoming redundant. These key practical life skills can not only shape young people’s future learning and career, but brings a host of benefits for their overall well being – especially in a community workshop like ours!
Our wide range of programmes for young people seeks alternative routes into making, using creativity as a tool to champion issues they care about, exploring how they can build their skill set including developing a creative mindset to the environment around them.
We focus on building networks, establishing strong partnerships with creatives, community leaders, local schools and colleges alongside grass roots organisations. These partnerships give an opportunity for young people to explore how making is as integral to everyday life as it is to building our environment around us and everything within it – and how they are our future makers for all of that.

Family Make Stuff Club
Family Make Stuff Club sessions are accessible for beginners and are open to parents and guardians with a child 7-15 years old. These classes are ideal for children interested in making. Over two hours, both children and adults will learn the basics of woodworking covering skills such as measuring, marking out, hand sawing and drilling.
Make Stuff Club
Make Stuff Club is an after school and home school provision offering making sessions for 9–13-year-olds. Following a hands on, creative curriculum and collaborating with local makers and organisations, young people build an array of creative skills and increased confidence. Our termly SEN After School Club has a smaller group size and trained SEN facilitator.
Activators
Co-founded by the Blackhorse Responders cohort in 2022 this is the Alumni follow on sessions for all of those who have taken part in our programme. We continue to meet once a month supporting you to continue making and showcasing new work within the community whilst supporting you in any next steps for your future.
Responders
Blackhorse Responders is a creative activism programme for young people aged 16-25 years old. Over 5 months of weekly workshops we blend learning practical skills and design thinking, responding to and engaging with our local community whilst getting connected to the incredible creative opportunities our city has to offer.
Schools
Our Creative Careers Tours take you around our community wood and metal workshops with a peek behind the scenes in our studios, introducing a live working environment of designers and makers showcasing the ways people use practical skills to earn their living. We explore the creative journeys they took to develop their careers and offer guidance on how to get started. Students will encounter live demonstrations of specialist techniques from our technicians and have the chance to have a go themselves.
