We welcome everyone from all backgrounds and skill levels to come and use the wood and metalwork machinery and tools. From the absolute beginner to seasoned professional, we can provide you with the knowledge to get making or the space and machinery for working on larger projects.

To use Blackhorse Workshop you must first complete a compulsory induction, which meets health and safety requirements. After this you will be ready to book a bench and get started on your project. Our Health and Safety Inductions assume that you are already familiar with the majority of the machinery; if you are just starting out, we recommend our ‘Introduction to…’ and ‘Project’ courses which spend more time on practicing skills and techniques.

Group inductions for the main machinery and equipment in Blackhorse Workshop can be booked:

Health & Safety Induction: Woodwork Level 2
Covers the safe use of our table saw, planer and thicknesser. This induction is optional but must be completed if you would like to use any of these machines. Before signing up for Level 2, please make sure you have completed Health & Safety Induction: Woodwork Level 1 or sign up to our combined Woodwork: Health & Safety Induction: Woodwork Level 1 & 2, running over 2-evenings.

Specialist spaces and equipment inductions:

Woodturning:
If you’re new to woodturning, you’ll need to complete our Introduction to Woodturning weekend course before you can book a lathe.

Forge:

If you’re new to blacksmithing, you’ll need to complete our Introduction to Blacksmithing course before you can book the forge.

Framing:

If you’re new to framing, you’ll need to complete our Introduction to Framing course before you can book the framing bench.

Please email info@blackhorseworkshop.co.uk if you are booking one of these spaces for the first time to arrange for an induction – you’ll need to have previous experience to use these areas.

Supported Session

Completed your induction but not quite confident working in the workshop solo?
Join our supported session where a specialist technician will be on hand to answer your questions, share tips and tricks, and help you get started on your project or simply give you space to practice your skills with expert guidance.

Woodwork sessions run every first Wednesday of the month. Metalwork session run every last Thursday of the month. Sign up via our courses & events page.

1-2-1 Tutoring

We can offer 1-2-1 tutoring, subject to availability, at £45 per hour plus the cost of your bench booking. Get in touch at info@blackhorseworkshop.co.uk. 

Membership

If you plan to use the Workshop regularly, you may benefit from our 1-month, 6-month and 1-year full membership, or our Metal-only membership (including MIG, TIG, brazing hearth and forge). Under 18s using the workshop
Young people under 15 must be accompanied by an adult (who must have completed an induction), and must not use the machines unless participating in one of our taught programmes. Those users aged 15-18 are able to use the lower risk machinery items after completing the Woodwork Level 1 induction, excluding the chop saw which must be used under technician supervision.
